Fuzhou University is one of the national key universities that are selected into the “211 Project”, a Chinese government program for the 21st century to support 100 select universities for their further rapid development. Fuzhou University is a co-constructing university between Fujian Province and Chinese Ministry of Education. It was founded in 1958. Since its establishment, Fuzhou University has developed into a key comprehensive university, giving priority to engineering courses and enjoying a reputation for excellence in other fields including sciences, economics, management, liberal arts, law, arts and design, etc.
There are 19 schools in Fuzhou University mainly for undergraduate education and two independently operated colleges - Zhicheng College and Yangguang College. There are 1 national key discipline, 1 national fostering key discipline, 7 national “211 Project” key disciplines, 23 provincial key disciplines, 8 post-doctoral research stations, 9 doctoral degree programs for the first-level disciplines, 58 doctoral degree programs for the secondary disciplines, 35 master’s degree programs for the first-level disciplines and 141 master’s degree programs for the secondary disciplines and 11 professional degree authorization stations (thereinto, engineering master degree covers 22 engineering fields).
At present, the university has 3088 faculties and staffs, including 1895 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (3 are part-time academicians), 1 academician of the International Academy of Sciences for Europe and Asia, 1 academician of the Holland Royal Academy of Sciences, 2 distinguished professors of the National Recruitment Program for Global Experts (One-Thousand-Expert-Plan) , 2 distinguished professors of the Chang Jiang Scholar Program, 5 awardees of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (1 chair professor), 5 members of the New Century National Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project, 8 professors supported by the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in Universities, 119 experts of receiving special government allowance and 208 doctoral supervisors.
Fuzhou University welcomes foreign students as well as students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions of China. It has now around 50,000 degree-seeking students, including 21,500 undergraduate students and 7,700 graduate students (nearly 500 PhD candidates). There are 9,500 undergraduate students in Zhicheng College and 6400 undergraduate students in Yangguang College. Since its founding, Fuzhou University has cultivated nearly 200,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university has 2 National Talent Cultivation Centers, 3 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, 1 National Pilot Zone in Cultivating Innovative Talents, 3 national quality courses, 1 national bilingual model course, 7 national characteristic specialties, 1 national teaching group and 10 education innovation bases of graduate students.
